As an English teacher, I often encounter students who want to expand their vocabulary in specific areas of life. One important area is pregnancy, which involves many unique terms that can be confusing for non-native speakers. Pregnancy is a universal experience that touches many lives, so having the right words to describe it is not only practical but also allows us to empathize with and support those going through it.
I know this from personal experience: I gave birth in a foreign country (Japan), and while it was an incredible journey, it was also stressful at times. Communicating with doctors and midwives in a second language taught me just how important it is to have the right vocabulary. Today, we'll learn some key pregnancy-related terminology, along with example sentences to help you use them in context.

Pregnancy Vocabulary for English Learners

6. Due Date

7. Contractions
Definition: The tightening of muscles in the uterus, often signaling the start of labor.

8. Labor
Definition: The process of giving birth to a baby.

9. Epidural
Definition: A type of anesthesia given during labor to reduce pain.

10. Cravings
Definition: Strong desires to eat specific foods, often experienced during pregnancy.

11. Prenatal
Definition: Related to the time before birth.

12. Uterus
Definition: The organ in a woman’s body where the fetus develops during pregnancy.

13. NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)

14. Maternity Leave

15. Paternity Leave

16. Midwife
Definition: A healthcare professional who provides care and support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.

17. Obstetrician (OB)

18. Postpartum

20. Breastfeeding

21. Formula

22. Stretch Marks

23. Bump
