One of the most confusing parts of English grammar is knowing when to use "the" and when to leave it out.
Many English learners learn that "the" means we are talking about a specific thing. While that's often true, there are several common situations where native speakers don't use "the", even when it feels like they should.
In this lesson, we'll look at some of the most common cases where English does not use "the." If you ever get confused, don't worry, you can always come back to this blog or rewatch the lesson video.
When NOT to Use "The" in English: 1. Places Used for Their Main Purpose
Sometimes a noun refers to a place in general, not a specific building. In these cases, we often leave out "the."
Go to bed
✅ I'm tired. I'm going to bed.
❌ I'm tired. I'm going to the bed.
"Go to bed" means "go to sleep."
However:
✅ The cat is sleeping on the bed.
Here, we're talking about a specific piece of furniture.
Go to church
✅ They go to church every Sunday.
This means they attend religious services.
However:
✅ The church on Main Street is very old.
Now we're talking about the building itself.
Other common examples:

However, if you are talking about a specific meal, you can use "the."

The best approach is to learn common expressions one at a time and notice how native speakers use them. The best way to practice is to imatate what you hear. So, listen closely to what native speakers say.
