Did you know that some English words change their pronunciation depending on whether they’re used as a noun or a verb? 🤯 In many two-syllable English words, the word stress changes depending on the part of speech. A common pattern is: 👉 NOUN: stress the first syllable 👉 VERB: stress the second syllable For example: REcord (noun) → I listened to the record. reCORD (verb) → I’m going to record a video. DEcrease (noun) → There was a decrease in sales. deCREASE (verb) → Sales began to decrease. PREsent (noun) → She gave me a present. preSENT (verb) → I have to present my idea. PROduce (noun) → The store sells fresh produce. proDUCE (verb) → This factory produces cars. CONtract (noun) → I signed the contract. conTRACT (verb) → Metal contracts when it gets cold. INcrease (noun) → We saw an increase in prices. inCREASE (verb) → Prices continue to increase. PERmit (noun) → You need a permit. perMIT (verb) → They don’t permit smoking here. PROtest (noun) → There was a protest downtown. proTEST (verb) → The workers decided to protest. This pattern doesn’t apply to every English noun and verb, but learning it can help you sound more natural and fluent when speaking English.
